How would you describe the "essence" of Fort Wayne?Read the rest of Leo Morris' editorial here. Posted by Admin at March 25, 2003 01:48 PMThat question is possibly the most important message conveyed at IPFW Tuesday night during the speech by Carnegie Mellon University professor Richard Florida. The more people who have fun trying to answer it, the brighter the community's future will be.
I think Leo Morris gets it! He's right that we shouldn't accept these theories on their face value, but that we should look into them.

The essence of Fort Wayne is "family values". It is simply a great place to raise a family. That's not as sexy as some city's images, but it is NOT unimportant. Ultimately, "family friendliness" is something the vast majority of people come to value in life. We value the perceived safety of Fort Wayne's attractive neighborhoods, the relative ease of getting from place to place without major traffic snarls and the many amenities of a mid-sized city. That includes a great choice of private and public schools, minor league sports, a variety of shopping venues and restaurants. We like the size of our city. Big enough to offer lots of opporttunities, small enough to allow access and influence for all citizens. And yes, we enjoy our proximity to larger cities that offer the resources that only a mtropolis can provide. It is a fine and noble task to aspire for more..to draw the core group of the creative types, to become (once again) a hotbed of innovation. Those are great goals, but let us not forget the wonderful qualities that our community offers today. Let's learn how to market our strengths while we address our weaknesses!
Posted by: Chris Cage at March 25, 2003 05:39 PMLeo Morris's editorial is right on track! Fort Wayne already has a lot more going for it than most people give it credit for. Continuing discussion on our cities future and development is the key. The fact that we already have this web site discussion and other forward thinking groups like "Invent Tomorrow" mean that we are already ahead of most midwestern cities.
Just by embracing diversity, creative development, and celebrating Ft. Wayne's rich surroundings and history puts us on the right road.
